Beautiful trail and stunning basalt canyon!
Studlagil Canyon offers a lovely walking trail of about an hour for a round trip from the parking area. Along the way, you’ll find lush green patches where sheep graze in groups, adding a peaceful countryside charm to the hike. There’s also a small waterfall called Studlafoss en route — nice to see, though not particularly remarkable compared to others in Iceland.

What truly makes this place special are the beautifully constructed viewpoints that allow you to admire the striking basalt rock formations shaping the canyon. The contrast of the columnar rocks with the turquoise river below makes it one of the most unique and picturesque canyons in Iceland.

Ein super interessanter Canyon!
Unbedingt auf dem östlichen Parkplatz beim Stuðlafoss Waterfall parken, von da aus kommt man näher ran und kann theoretisch sogar bis runter ans Wasser klettern. Der Weg dahin ist zwar eine Katastrophe mit den 1000 Schlaglöchern, aber absolut machbar und die Aussicht lohnt sich!
Man läuft ca. 30min vom Parkplatz bis zum Canyon, vorbei am Wasserfall und einigen Schafen. 🙂

These are pictures (summer 2025) of the new viewing platforms and stairs down to the river on the WEST (tourist bus) side. I was very happy of the new additions as we were unable to rent a car and independently explore the east side as you see on social media. Very well done and made viewing the canyon safe and picturesque.

Aus meiner Sicht lohnt nur die Ostseite des Canyons einen Besuch, denn nur von dort aus kommt man wirklich an den Canyon heran und kann hineinklettern, um das wirkliche Feeling zu erhalten.
Auf teils rutschigen Steinen kann man bis zu. Fluss und den Basaltsäulen hinuntersteigen.
Besonders bei größerem Andrang dürfte das nicht besonders leicht sein.

Die frühe Anreise lohnt, denn ab ca. 9 Uhr wird es dann schon deutlich voller.

Von Parkplatz sind es nochmal gut 30 Minuten weg, aber die Zeit vergeht schnell durch die schöne Landschaft und den Wasserfall.

Der Parkplatz ist kostenpflichtig und wie so oft weiß man nicht, wofür man hier bezahlt, um auf einem Acker zu stehen. Zumindest gibt es Toiletten.

Pretty easy hike for a unique ability to walk in basalt by the river near the end of the trail. The views of the canyon are beautiful all along the trail, and it was one of my favorite hikes in Iceland. Be careful when walking on the basalt though, it can get slippery and steep.

Zona gratuita. Canyon di basalto. Molto imponente. Si può visitare camminando a lato sud entrando dal bivio di una pizzeria e della cascata, altrimenti andando avanti dove manda l indicazione di google maps si arriva ad un parcheggio e si può ammirare il canyon da tante terrazze sparse. Nel primo modo c è da camminare una buona mezz'ora, nel secondo modo niente

Une petite randonnée pédestre facile (environ 5 km aller-retour) sur un sentier empierré qui nous amène sur le magnifique canyon de Studlagil. Nous avons eu la chance de faire cette balade avec le soleil et la couleur de l'eau était magique. Les colonnes de basalte magnifient le spectacle. Possibilité de descendre dans le canton au bord de l'eau et de faire de très belles photos !

You just have to pay for parking and they have a hotdog stand with a bathroom. This place was disappointing. Make sure you check the time you are visiting as the water was just grey for us. We spent more than an hour visiting as the information that we researched told us that the water was going to be blue until September but I guess it was too late. The water was not blue so it did not look nice.
