An extremely beautiful, secluded waterfall, where few people are present.
At the parking lot on the left, there is a small stream running downwards. Just follow this down to the bottom and then follow the river upstream. Be careful, there is quite a lot of ice at the waterfall in winter. And without spikes, it is not walkable. You can also take a walk downstream.

A lesser-known but beautiful waterfall located not far from Reykjavík, making it an easy stop if you’re exploring the Golden Circle or nearby Þingvellir National Park. The falls drop about 18 meters over a wide cliff, creating a graceful curtain of water that feels both peaceful and dramatic. It’s not as powerful as Iceland’s major waterfalls, but its quiet setting and easy accessibility make it appealing.

The surrounding landscape adds to the charm, with rolling hills and lava fields framing the river. Unlike many other waterfalls in Iceland, Þórufoss often has far fewer visitors, so you might have it nearly to yourself, especially outside of peak tour hours. It also gained some pop culture fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones, which draws in fans curious to see it in person.

Access is simple, with a short drive off the main road and a small parking area near the falls. From there, it’s just a brief walk to the viewing point. The path isn’t difficult, though it can be muddy or slippery after rain, so good shoes are recommended.

There aren’t any facilities at Þórufoss — no café, restrooms, or visitor center — so plan accordingly. It’s best as a quick stop to break up a day of sightseeing rather than a long visit.

Overall, Þórufoss is a quiet and scenic waterfall that offers a nice contrast to Iceland’s more crowded attractions. It’s not the most spectacular in the country, but its accessibility, peaceful atmosphere, and cinematic connection make it a worthwhile detour.

Was a cool stop in the morning and easy to get up close to the base of the falls. Plenty of parking.
The start of the trail down is not clear at all. If you just entered the parking lot, start the trail off to the right side by crossing the small dip and then walking down along the hillside down to the river.

Lovely waterfall just below the level of the road. Small parking area for ~ a dozen cars. It’s was full at noon on a Sunday when we visited, but visits are quick. There is no trail - you just meander East over spongy moss, gravel, and rocks to see the falls - the path is mostly flat, but the walk would be difficult for anyone with mobility challenges. Lovely quick stop!

We stopped at this waterfall by chance and would recommend anyone add it to their list! You can navigate to the base of the waterfall or walk along the ridge and see other waterfalls and the river.

Magnifique, avec la chance d’être tout seul , situé juste en bord de route , il y a la possibilité de descendre et aussi d’aller juste à côté de la chute , on y a passé au moins une heure mais cela aurait pu être plus tellement l’endroit est superbe

A quiet and lesser-known waterfall not far from Þingvellir. It’s easy to miss if you just follow the main road, but definitely worth a short detour.

Þórufoss is tall, elegant, and beautifully set in a peaceful valley with almost no crowds — when we visited, we had the whole place to ourselves. The waterfall is also known for appearing in Game of Thrones (season 4, when the dragon attacks the goats), which makes it a fun stop for fans of the series.

Parking is just a minute’s walk from the viewpoint, so it’s an easy and rewarding stop on a Golden Circle route.

Parkplatz kostenfrei.
